Q & A with Colin Rankine
Red Stylo Media's staff minion, Matthew Erman, gave a short Q&A to Unprofessional Writer, Colin Rankine, as part of our new "Red (Spot)Light" series. Some fun bits in this one...read on!
Don't forget to check out Chapter #2 of The Unprofessionals--A Sociopathic Bromance in the Red Stylo Media store!Q: So Colin, we'd like to know first off, what are major influences as a writer?A: Jorge Luis Borges, William S. Burroughs, Eavesdropping, James Ellroy, Edward Gibbon, Robert Irwin, Ursula LeGuin, Robert Louis Stevenson, Television, Gene Wolfe...So many others...
Q: That's quite a list! Where's your favorite place to pick up comics?A: Nominally, Comix Experience on Divisadero Street in San Francisco is my local, though lately I've been trawling ComiXology a bit. I feel guilty about it.
Q: How did you get into comics?A: How did I start liking comics? Someone gave me a copy of, I think, Thor, circa 1979, about a space giant with mouths in the palms of his hands, and I was hooked. As far as how I started making comics? I am still working on that.Q: Do you have any long term projects?A: All my projects are long-term projects!
Q: Who would be your dream team to work with?A: Rick Veitch. Q: Marvel, DC, or Indie? A: I have enjoyed many Marvel comics in my days, but I feel like your mainstream players are in serious trouble. Indie books are hard for me to keep track of, but they are exciting and inspiring, even when they're awful.
Q: If you could have one super power what would it be and why?A: I would be solid all the way through, like a potato, all of my biological processes occurring through a sort of biochemical diffusion; a huge hinged jaw like a snake's, with these sort of grabbers on the insides of my cheeks to keep my prey from wriggling loose; the ability to transmit memetic as well as genetic information to my offspring (transomatesis); and a telepathic rapport with a like-minded person of another species in a distant galaxy.

The Unprofessionals Chapter 2: Spider Man
Remember remember the Fifth of November! Why? An overly dramatic revolution? No! The Unprofessionals - Chapter #2: Spider Man is released digitally!
Check in with us on Facebook all weekend, with sneak previews of Chapter #2, and head over to Red Stylo Media's store to pre-order Chapter 2 because we've all been missing our favorite wannabe "ninjas", Jake & Leo.
They've already got one job under their belt: low-life gambler and Welfare cheat Benny Chow. But they've stepped on the toes of Bojack & Lugo, two vicious pros with sensitive egos, and their shenanigans have drawn the attention of the NYPD. Expect violent hijinx, criminal antics, and probably some bickering in the second installment of The Unprofessionals!

Girl Gamer Review
Fantastic review over the weekend from GirlGamer.com. Colin, Alexis, Chris, Kate and Erik were each mentioned. A small excerpt:
For me, however, the real standout of The Unprofessionals art team is colorist Kate Glasheen, whose beautiful, hand-painted watercolors bring to the surface underlying themes in the story that a lesser colorist might have glossed over in the face of a standard “gritty” look. Glasheen excels at making the pretty look slightly scary.Excited to see some recognition for the whole crew! Read the full review here: http://www.girlgamer.com/zine/article/2176/

The Unprofessionals Go Pro
San Diego Comic Con was a runaway success for the special Limited Edition Trade Paperback of Chapter 1: The Son-in-Law. This book is packed with extras that include previews and script from upcoming chapters, and each copy must be certified numbered and signed by Alexis Cruz or Colin Rankine to be official.
Only 500 copies of this special book will ever exist, and over half of the remaining books have already been spoken for via our Kickstarter Backers and other VIP's, not to mention the lucky folks who snapped up copies at San Diego and may also pick up copies at upcoming events and signings in the next two months (specific dates and locations TBA this week!)
What was that? You didn't back us on Kickstarter? You couldn't make it to San Diego for Comic Con? You never leave your house and won't make it to another show this year? And you want a signed and numbered copy anyway? Crazy!
Oh, OK...just for you. You and 199 of your closest friends and that's it!

Almost out the door!
Holy Moe! As of wednesday, June 20, 2012, we are putting the last touches on the trade edition of The Unprofessionals #1, written by Colin Rankine, drawn by Chris Moreno, colors by Kate Glasheen, and letters by Troy Peteri. We will be ready for our big debut at San Diego Comic Con in July.
It's been a bumpy-ass road to get here! We started out with no practical knowledge about making a comic--we just took a leap, and it feels like we hit every rock and sticky-outty tree-branch on the way down. We had production delays, cash flow problems, and neurotic detonations, but here we are! We couldn't have done it without the continued support of our Kickstarter backers, our public and fans, and the roster of really talented & visionary people who have joined our team.
We are so excited to finally have an actual book to put in your hands. Stay tuned, there's more to come.

Getting the hang of this
Erik Reeves, The UNprofessionals #2 |
In the meantime, we're rolling right along. All of our operatives have their mission briefs, pages on 3 chapters are being cranked out, and Backer rewards are continuing to go out as they're produced.
We won that Kickstarter campaign, btw. In case you didn't know. Thanks to the loving hearts and generous support of the public, we nailed that seemingly impossible goal and we're in the top 10 most successful comics project on Kickstarter.com
Thanks to everyone who believed in the project and thank you for continuing to roll with us. The road ahead looks pretty awesome.
